Help Puerto Rico’s Rainforest – El Yunque
August 23, 2012 h4>
Puerto Rico has the United States’ only rainforest – El Yunque. This place is amazing.
We went on a couple of really beautiful hikes there. It’s nothing like Colorado – so lush, green and WET!
The rainforests of the world play a really important part to the earth’s ecosystem. They are often called the “lungs” of the planet for their role in absorbing carbon dioxide (a greenhouse gas) and producing oxygen – upon which all humans and animals depend for survival. Rainforests also stabilize the climate, house incredible amounts of plants and wildlife, and produce nourishing rainfall all around the planet.
There’s a neat organization in Puerto Rico – Eye on the Rainforest - that’s working hard to educate people about the rainforest, and to ensure it is sustainable long after my lifetime. Please check them out. Not only can you donate money, they have some great volunteer opportunities – even for kids!
I learned about rainforests in the second grade and thought they were so cool that I decided to have a lemonde stand to raise money. My friend Ava and I raised $150 to help save the rainforest in South America – the most out of all the kids in our class. It was such a great feeling to help save the lungs of the planet!
Help be part of the solution – and get involved! It’s easier than you think.
